The Flame of Liberty stands as a full-scale, gold-leaf-covered replica of the torch held by the Statue of Liberty in New York. It was donated to the city of Paris in 1989 by the International Herald Tribune to commemorate the newspaper's one-hundredth anniversary of publishing in the city. The sculpture serves as a thank-you to France for the meticulous restoration work performed by two French businesses on the Statue of Liberty three years prior. These artisans, specifically from Métalliers Champenois and Gohard Studios, used their expertise to revitalize the iconic American monument, and the flame symbolizes the enduring connection between the two nations.
