Hôtel d'Avaray

The Hôtel d’Avaray is marked by an ornate stone carriage entrance on the rue de Grenelle, topped with a weathered, sculpted coat of arms. Built in seventeen twenty-eight for Claude-Théophile de Béziade, the Marquis d’Avaray, this town house stands as a primary example of eighteenth-century aristocratic residential architecture. Since nineteen twenty, it has served as the official residence of the Netherlands ambassador to France. Inside, the private gardens extend deep toward the Seine, shielded from the street by these high masonry walls.
