Hôtel de Boisgelin (Rue de Varenne, Paris)

The Hôtel de Boisgelin features a limestone facade marked by a heavy, arched porte-cochère that opens directly onto the Rue de Varenne. Completed in seventeen thirty-two, this private mansion served as the home of the Marquis de Boisgelin. In the nineteen thirties, the Italian government acquired the building for its embassy. During the Second World War, the diplomat Pietro Quaroni sheltered Jewish families here, hiding them behind the embassy walls to protect them from the German authorities occupying the rest of the city.
