Place de la Contrescarpe

The name of this square tells you exactly what stood here eight centuries ago. The word contrescarpe refers to the outer slope of the ditch that protected the medieval city wall built by King Philip the Second Augustus. While the wall itself has long since vanished, the square preserves that ancient defensive line in its very name, marking one of the few surviving traces of the city's medieval fortification system.
