Place Alfred Kastler is a quiet, triangular wedge of public space tucked behind the main building of the École normale supérieure. It is marked by a modest bust of the physicist himself, looking out over a few stone benches and a scattering of plane trees. Kastler spent years in the laboratories just a few feet away, developing the methods of optical pumping that earned him a Nobel Prize in nineteen sixty-six. He kept his office here even after his retirement, continuing his work among the students.
