The Sorbonne displays a long, austere facade of weathered limestone topped by the distinct, high-reaching dome of the Chapel of Saint Ursula. Founded in twelve fifty-seven as a modest hostel for theology students, it grew into the intellectual engine of the University of Paris. Cardinal Richelieu ordered the current classical reconstruction in the sixteen twenties to assert his own legacy. Beneath the chapel floor, he lies entombed in a marble sarcophagus, perpetually watching over the lecture halls where his successors refined French thought.
