Marché couvert des Enfants Rouges

The iron roof of the Marché des Enfants Rouges spans the oldest covered market in Paris. King Henry the Fourth founded it in sixteen fifteen to supply the neighborhood, naming it for the red coats worn by the children at a nearby orphanage. While the stalls now hold prepared foods from around the globe, the footprint remains exactly as it was four centuries ago. A developer once moved to demolish the site for apartments in the nineteen eighties, but local residents blocked the bulldozers.
