Académie de la Grande Chaumière

The Académie de la Grande Chaumière is a narrow, unassuming building tucked away on Rue de la Grande Chaumière. Its weathered facade conceals the former studio of Martha Stettler and Alice Dannenberg, who opened the space in nineteen oh four. Unlike the strict state-run art schools of the time, this academy allowed students to paint without a master looking over their shoulders. Alberto Giacometti arrived in nineteen twenty-two and kept a small, dusty studio here for the rest of his working life.
