The Hotel de Sully serves as a bridge between two of the most iconic parts of the Marais, physically connecting the busy Rue Saint-Antoine to the grand, symmetrical arcades of the Place des Vosges. While most historic mansions in this neighborhood were built using the trendy red brick and stone style of the early seventeenth century, this property boldly showcased a different aesthetic. Its architects chose to build almost entirely with freestone, a costly and rare decision at the time that helped set a new standard for luxury in Parisian private residences. As you walk through the courtyard, look up at the facade to spot the highly detailed stone carvings of figures representing the four seasons and the elements, which still retain the elaborate, almost decorative spirit of the Renaissance.
