The Theatre Mogador was born from the ambitions of British financier Sir Alfred Butt during the First World War. He originally named it the Palace Theatre to attract British soldiers stationed in France, modeling its design after the popular music halls of his home country. The name changed shortly thereafter to Mogador, which is the historical name for the Moroccan town now known as Essaouira.
