The Théâtre de la Porte Saint-Martin was constructed at a breakneck pace in 1781 after a fire destroyed the previous home of the Paris Opéra. To ensure the performance schedule remained uninterrupted, the architect Nicolas Lenoir promised Queen Marie-Antoinette that he would build the entire structure in just three months. Two teams of workers labored day and night to fulfill this pledge, completing the theater in only two months.
