Cour Damoye

The Cour Damoye stands as a remarkably quiet, cobbled exception to the frantic pace of the surrounding Place de la Bastille. Created in seventeen eighty by a local hardware merchant named Antoine Pierre Damoye, this narrow passage was built on land that once served as a training ground for royal archers. The area replaced the former sewer of the Saint Antoine ditches and the outer defenses of the old fortress. Its uniform, orderly design was an early example of commercial real estate development, featuring ground-floor workshops topped by living quarters intended for artisans and traders.
