Art Ludique

museum

Art Ludique was created to challenge the traditional boundaries of the art world by treating entertainment media as serious artistic achievements. When it opened in 2013, it became the first museum globally to dedicate itself entirely to the contemporary art of video games, comic books, manga, and animation. Its founders, Jean-Jacques and Diane Launier, sought to honor the illustrators, character designers, and set artists who shape modern visual culture but historically lacked formal institutional recognition. The museum takes its name from the French term for art as entertainment. By displaying sketches, digital paintings, and sculptures from major studios, it frames these works as a modern evolution of the figurative and narrative traditions established by nineteenth-century illustrators. The project was born from the success of the couple's earlier gallery, Arludik, which was the first of its kind to sell and exhibit original concept art from films and games. Throughout its run in Paris, the museum hosted major exhibitions that drew hundreds of thousands of visitors, showcasing the immense craftsmanship involved in building the imaginary worlds we see on screens.
