Fontaines de la Concorde

These two monumental fountains were designed by the architect Jacques Ignace Hittorff and completed in 1840 under the reign of King Louis-Philippe. Their creation was a direct response to the arrival of the Luxor Obelisk, an ancient Egyptian monument gifted to France that now stands between them. Hittorff arranged the fountains to flank this obelisk, creating a symmetrical layout inspired by the grand public squares he had studied in Rome.
