The street you are walking along is known as the Boulevard du Temple, but in the nineteenth century, it earned the nickname Boulevard du Crime. This name did not stem from any actual danger or lawlessness on the street. Instead, it referred to the high density of theaters that performed popular crime melodramas night after night. Audiences flocked here to watch theatrical villains commit thousands of fictional murders, poisonings, and betrayals.
