You are walking toward a place that serves as a quiet urban sanctuary today, but it once functioned as a city within a city. In the thirteenth century, this site was the formidable European headquarters of the Knights Templar. They transformed what was then swampy, undesirable land into a secure, fortified enclosure known as the Enclos du Temple, complete with a massive turreted keep that held the royal treasury of France.
