Opéra Bastille

The Opéra Bastille stands on the exact site of a former railway station, the Gare de la Bastille, which served commuters from 1859 until its closure in 1969. In the years following the station's demolition, the area remained a void until President François Mitterrand selected this spot for his ambitious project to create a new, modern people's opera house. He timed its inauguration specifically for July 13, 1989, to coincide with the bicentennial celebrations of the French Revolution. This location carries deep symbolic weight, as it sits at the threshold of the square where the original Bastille prison was stormed two centuries earlier, marking a transition from the site of an old monarchical stronghold to a democratic space for the performing arts.
