King Louis the Thirteenth commissioned its creation in 1615 to provide fresh food and supplies to the rapidly expanding residential district of the Marais. The market originally operated under the name Petit Marche du Marais, serving as a vital hub for local traders and artisans who gathered under a hall supported by sixteen massive oak pillars.
