The Porte Saint Denis is a massive triumphal arch that stands at the site of one of the medieval gateways of Paris. It was commissioned by King Louis the Fourteenth in the late seventeenth century to replace the older, crumbling fortification that once stood here. While the earlier gate was built to keep invaders out, this structure was designed strictly as a monument to celebrate the military triumphs of the Sun King.
