You are standing near the site of the former Prison de l'Abbaye. In the seventeenth century, this building served as a harsh detention facility within the grounds of the Saint-Germain-des-Prés Abbey. It became notorious for its dark, subterranean dungeons and its reputation as one of the most feared places of confinement in Paris. The structure was defined by a heavy, three-story design flanked by two defensive turrets that loomed over the neighborhood.
