Tuileries Garden

The Tuileries Garden owes its name to the humble origin of the land it occupies. Before the sixteenth century, the site was a collection of tile factories, where the French word for tile, tuile, provided the namesake for both this space and the grand palace that once anchored it. Queen Catherine de Medici commissioned the first iteration of the garden in fifteen sixty-four, aiming to recreate the Italian Renaissance style she remembered from her childhood in Florence.
