Ubii Monument

The Ubii Monument consists of a curved stone wall tucked behind a modern school building. It is a remnant of a gatehouse constructed in the first century. The Ubii tribe settled here, and this masonry marks the spot where Cologne began as a Roman settlement. In nineteen sixty-nine, workers digging foundations for the school accidentally hit the base of these stones. They stopped construction to excavate, revealing the oldest city wall ever found in Germany. The wall remains where the Romans built it.
