Roman Tower Helenturm

historic

The Roman Tower, or Helenturm, stands out for the distinct, uneven masonry of its lower section, which dates back to the first century. It formed part of the original northern wall of Roman Cologne, known then as Colonia Claudia Ara Agrippinensium. In the mid-nineteenth century, local officials decorated the tower with stone statues of historical figures to emphasize the city's connection to its Roman roots. These sculptures remain fixed to the exterior, keeping watch over the street below as the centuries pass.
