St. Kolumba, Cologne

A jagged, porous wall of grey Roman-style bricks rises in the heart of Cologne, honeycombed with thin vertical slits that filter daylight into the ruins inside. This is the remains of the Saint Kolumba church, destroyed by Allied bombs in nineteen forty-three. After the war, architect Peter Zumthor encased the surviving Gothic fragments and the foundation of a Roman villa beneath them in this stark, skeletal shell. He crafted a vessel that holds silence, shadows, and the weight of two thousand years.
