Eigelsteintorburg

The Eigelsteintorburg stands as a massive, triple-towered brick gatehouse guarding the northern edge of Cologne. Built during the thirteenth century, it served as the primary entrance for visitors arriving from the Rhineland. Kings and emperors marched their entourages through this arch to gain entry into the city. In sixteen thirty-three, when a Swedish army threatened the gates, the city council decided to wall it up entirely to prevent a breakthrough. The gate remained sealed until the nineteenth century finally brought its restoration.
