Rheinboulevard

The Rheinboulevard is a wide, stone staircase that descends directly into the Rhine river. These broad steps replaced a jagged, neglected concrete embankment that had separated the Deutz neighborhood from the water for decades. During the Roman era, this exact spot held a fortified bridgehead called Divitia, which protected the crossing into Cologne. Today, the modern stone tiers serve as a massive outdoor theater where thousands of people gather on summer evenings to watch the sun set over the cathedral spires.
