WDR Funkhaus

The WDR Funkhaus consists of a cluster of buildings with a distinct, windowless brick facade that separates the recording studios from the city noise outside. Built in the early nineteen fifties, it served as the heart of West German broadcasting during the postwar era. Composer Karlheinz Stockhausen spent years here in Studio Eleven, manipulating magnetic tape and electronic oscillators to create groundbreaking soundscapes. He treated these concrete chambers as instruments, forever changing how music was composed and recorded within these walls.
