Manto Mavrogenous Statue

The bronze statue of Manto Mavrogenous stands in the center of the square, her hand outstretched toward the sea. She wears the traditional dress of the nineteenth century, reflecting the period when she financed and led ships against the Ottoman Empire during the Greek War of Independence. Mavrogenous spent her family fortune on the cause, dying in poverty on Paros decades later. Locals erected this monument to honor her as the primary heroine of the island, despite her aristocratic family originally hailing from elsewhere.
