Archaeological Museum of Thera

The Archaeological Museum of Thera sits on a cliffside edge, identified by its plain, white-walled exterior that hides a vast collection of finds from the island. It houses artifacts recovered from the prehistoric city of Akrotiri, including intricate frescoes and pottery that survived the volcanic eruption in the seventeenth century before the common era. When that eruption occurred, the ash buried the settlement so quickly that even delicate wall paintings remained intact for thousands of years, eventually moved here for preservation.
