The Archipel Mansion stands out for its high, arched doors and the deep indigo blue paint framing its windows against the stark white volcanic plaster. This house began as a traditional captain’s residence in the nineteenth century, built for a family whose fortune came from the merchant shipping routes of the Aegean. Captains here famously competed to build the tallest, most imposing homes on the caldera edge. A local storm once ripped the shutters clean off, leaving the owner to rebuild them in reinforced iron.
