Museum of Prehistoric Thera

The Museum of Prehistoric Thera holds a vast collection of frescoes and artifacts recovered from the ruins of Akrotiri. Its white, modern exterior contrasts with the volcanic earth of the island. In nineteen sixty-seven, archaeologist Spyridon Marinatos began excavations that unearthed an entire town preserved under volcanic ash, much like Pompeii. These items reveal a sophisticated Bronze Age society that flourished before a massive eruption buried the settlement beneath layers of pumice, ending their residency on the island abruptly.
