Cathedral St. John the Baptist

The Cathedral of Saint John the Baptist stands out with its tall, pastel yellow bell tower rising against the caldera cliffs in Fira. Built in eighteen twenty-three, this Catholic church serves the island's small but historic Latin community. In nineteen fifty-six, a massive earthquake leveled much of the town, leaving the cathedral in ruins. Father Danos oversaw the painstaking reconstruction, sourcing funds from across Europe to rebuild the structure exactly as it appeared before the ground split open beneath the altar.
