Quran Gate‌

The Quran Gate in Shiraz stands apart because of the two small rooms built into the top of its archway. For centuries, travelers entering the city passed beneath these chambers, which held handwritten copies of the Quran. People believed that walking under the holy books as they left or entered Shiraz brought them safe passage on their journeys. Karim Khan Zand ordered the construction of these rooms during the eighteenth century to offer travelers a blessing of protection before they headed into the mountains.
