Castello di Riomaggiore

The Castello di Riomaggiore sits on a high, jagged ridge of rock, its two circular stone towers looming over the town below. The local rulers, the Marchesi di Turcotti, began building these defensive walls in twelve sixty to protect the village from pirates raiding the Ligurian coast. Later, the Republic of Genoa took control of the site, fortifying it further to solidify their influence. Today, the castle houses a local cemetery, the quiet graves tucked within the ancient, weathered defensive perimeter.
