Manarola viewpoint

The houses of Manarola cluster together like a stack of sun-bleached stones, their facades painted in deep ochre and terracotta. This village clings to the black, jagged cliffs above the Ligurian Sea. In the middle of the nineteenth century, the inhabitants began building the terraced vineyards that still frame the village, hauling baskets of earth up the steep slopes by hand. A local fisherman once relied on these heights to spot schools of anchovies, watching the water turn silver from this very ledge.
