The ferry dock in Riomaggiore juts out into the Ligurian Sea as a heavy concrete slab wedged between jagged, dark cliffs. Before this platform was built, the village had no direct access to the water for boats of any size. Villagers once hauled small fishing skiffs up the steep, rocky slopes by hand to protect them from the winter storms. Today, the platform provides a steady arrival point for ferries that connect the isolated coastline, replacing the isolation of the past.
