The Manarola marina consists of a steep, narrow concrete ramp carved directly into the dark, jagged cliffs that drop into the Ligurian Sea. Boats sit perched on the concrete, hoisted up by heavy steel cables and electric winches bolted to the rock face to escape the winter swells. For centuries, fishermen hauled these wooden gozzi boats by hand onto the rocks, but the motorized winches finally arrived in the nineteen fifties. The harbor has no sandy beach, only stone.
