Hokkaido University Ginkgo Avenue

Seventy ginkgo trees line this three-hundred-meter path, forming a golden tunnel each autumn. They were planted in nineteen thirty-nine, during a period when the university grounds were undergoing major expansion to accommodate new research facilities. Professor Shunsuke Inagaki oversaw the planting, envisioning a space that would provide a peaceful transition between the city and the academic buildings. Local residents gathered here to harvest the fallen ginkgo nuts for years, a tradition that continues even as the university grows more restrictive.
