The Poplar Avenue at Hokkaido University consists of seventy towering trees stretching three hundred meters toward the sky. It began in nineteen oh three when students planted the saplings as part of an agricultural research project. A powerful typhoon in two thousand four toppled many of the originals, leaving the path scarred and empty for years. Workers eventually replanted young trees in the gaps, and today the line of green leaves serves as the university's most recognizable landmark.
