Ōno Pond

Ōno Pond sits at the heart of Hokkaido University, framed by the dense greenery of the campus arboretum. It features a pair of small islands connected by a stone bridge, often serving as a landing spot for the local mallard ducks. Originally, this area was a marshy lowland until Ninbei Ōno, a farmer who cultivated rice here in the late nineteenth century, converted it into a productive paddy. The pond retains his name as a mark of those early agricultural experiments.
