Furukawa Memorial Hall

The Furukawa Memorial Hall stands out with its heavy stone exterior and the distinct, dark wood frame of its second floor. This building served as the Sapporo office for the Furukawa Mining Company, a powerhouse in the industrialization of early twentieth-century Hokkaido. Inside, the rooms retain a sense of the corporate life of nineteen fourteen, when the copper trade drove the regional economy. When the company moved out, they left behind desks and documents that track the rise of Japan’s northern frontier.
