Odori Park West 3-chome

park garden

A long, narrow green space cuts through the center of Sapporo, stretching thirteen blocks from east to west. This strip of land originated as a wide firebreak intended to separate the government offices in the north from the residential and commercial areas in the south. During the late nineteenth century, it served as a dumping ground for the city's snow and waste. Today, a television tower stands at the eastern edge, overlooking rows of elm trees, flower beds, and fountains.
