The steel frame of the Sapporo TV Tower rises nearly five hundred feet above Odori Park, its red and white antennas visible from almost anywhere in the city center. Built in nineteen fifty-seven, the tower originally functioned as a broadcasting hub for the burgeoning television industry. Its architect, Tachu Naito, also designed the Tokyo Tower. When workers finished the structure, it served as the tallest object in the city, holding a commanding view over the flat grid of downtown Sapporo.
