Takeshita Street

Takeshita Street is a narrow, three hundred fifty meter stretch packed with neon signage and densely clustered storefronts. In the late nineteen seventies, the street became the epicenter for amateur fashion designers selling handmade clothes from small stalls. This sudden concentration of subculture drew teenagers from across Tokyo who wanted styles they could not find in department stores. Today, the street remains the primary incubator for youth trends, often defined by the extreme, brightly colored garments displayed in the cramped windows along the sidewalk.
