Hachiko Statue

The bronze dog sitting near the Shibuya station entrance has floppy ears and a calm expression. This statue honors Hachiko, an Akita dog who waited at this station every evening for his owner, Professor Hidesaburo Ueno, for nine years after the professor died at work. Hachiko arrived daily until his own death in nineteen thirty-five. Commuters fed him and kept him company during those years, eventually raising the money to cast his likeness in metal right where he used to wait.
