Calle de la Amargura is a narrow, cobblestone alleyway in San Angel that drops steeply toward the Rio Chico. The name, which translates to Street of Bitterness, comes from a colonial-era legend about a jilted lover who waited there for a man who never returned. Residents once claimed to hear the phantom sound of her weeping on rainy nights. Today, high stone walls covered in bougainvillea hide the gardens of old estates, keeping the path quiet and isolated from the nearby traffic.
