Plaza San Jacinto

A fountain carved from a single piece of dark volcanic stone sits at the center of Plaza San Jacinto. This square served as the heart of a village once separated from the sprawl of Mexico City by orchards and wheat fields. In eighteen forty-seven, the United States military executed members of the Saint Patrick’s Battalion here. These were Irish soldiers who deserted the American army to fight alongside Mexico. The stone monument marking their sacrifice remains the focal point of the plaza today.
