Sculpture of the Nave

monument

The Sculpture of the Nave hangs suspended in the ceiling of the Rail Station hall like a giant, hollowed-out ship or a ribcage made of wood. It mimics the shape of the nineteenth-century station architecture itself, creating a tunnel within the tunnel. In two thousand twelve, artist Alicja Biała designed this piece to echo the station’s vaulted arches. She used hundreds of thin wooden slats to build the structure, light enough to hover above the commuters as they rush toward their trains.
