Plac Solny

Plac Solny is a square marked by a cluster of permanent, glass-walled flower kiosks that operate around the clock. Since the thirteenth century, this space served as the city’s salt market, where merchants offloaded wagonloads of mineral wealth from the nearby Wieliczka mines. During the final months of the second world war, the entire area became a defensive strongpoint, and the resulting firestorms left almost every structure surrounding the square a hollow shell before the rebuilding began in the late nineteen forties.
