Church and Monastery of St. Adalbert

The Church and Monastery of St. Adalbert dominates the area with its heavy, soot-colored brick walls and the tall, jagged profile of its Gothic facade. Founded in the twelfth century, it became the heart of the Dominican order in Silesia. During the Mongol invasion of twelve forty-one, the monastery served as a desperate final refuge for the city's inhabitants. The monks locked the iron gates, and the townspeople inside held the position until the attackers eventually grew tired and retreated from the walls.
